A word of encouragement 04.14.2020

During times of chaos, it is easy to get locked into the fears and uncertainty of tomorrow. When I am having those feelings, I take the time to look back to see how God has blessed me. So this morning, I would like to share an encouraging story with you, where God has turned an uncertain time in my life into a blessing.

Almost three years ago, I gathered a couple of friends on a fall Saturday morning and headed to a Fayette Artists Studio Tour. The last stop was a designer jewelry maker named Katy. Katy was also a cancer survivor. She wanted to give back to the cancer center where she had received her treatments. Creating earrings to give to ladies going through chemotherapy was her chosen way to do that. Making these creations available would hopefully lift their spirits and let them know that others were wishing them well.

Katy was offering her instructions and supplies at no charge to volunteers who wanted to be a part of this opportunity. Coincidentally, the cancer center that had treated Katy and was the recipient of the earrings was the same center where Al received his successful cancer treatments. That fact and my interest in crafty projects locked me into becoming a volunteer immediately.

Our volunteer group is known as BRIGHTER LIPSTICK BIGGER EARRINGS, an expression of encouragement by a chemotherapy nurse with a smile on her face to a patient.  “You just keep wearing brighter lipstick and bigger earrings and you’ll feel better”.  With support from Evergreen Church and numerous volunteers, we are anticipating adding more cancer treatment centers as recipients of the earrings in 2020.

Looking back, I know God put me in Katy’s studio on that fall Saturday to connect me to what has become a blessing in my life, by sharing a handcrafted gift with someone I hope will be uplifted. Today, I encourage you to look back and see  how has God blessed you? I encourage you to write it down so in the moments when you find yourself in uncertain times you see how God is truly blessing you.

Look forward and find your way to encourage others.

A word of encouragement 04.13.2020

This Quarantine, it’s getting old. A lot older for some people and more than others, but everyone’s getting tired. We want to be able to do fun things like go hangout with a friend and go to church. I know all of you miss going to the services very much, especially with Easter being yesterday. We are a church family and it doesn’t matter if you are a 9:30 am service person or an 11:00 am service person, like me.  During these different, and confusing times, we can still do the things we love. It may just look a little different. We can still enjoy church online, we can still be active, and we can still talk with our friends. The thing I am enjoying most right now is being active. My favorite activity is going on bike rides. On most days, I knock out a 6-mile ride. I also enjoy cooking, so I make myself, and other people in my house lunch (on most occasions). I even still talk to my friends, some from school, some not, and we’re all doing almost the same things we enjoyed pre-quarantine, just in a simpler manner. This quarantine has made us all simplify our schedules and daily routines.
Right now I wake up whenever, eat a good breakfast, get my chores done, and exercise. I encourage you to look at your routine and see how you can keep it simple while still enjoying the things you loved pre-quarantine. I encourage you to get outdoors, whether you walk, run, jog, or bike like me. It helps to do something.
The last thing I would like to encourage you with is to, spend some social time with your family. My family and I have been playing games, cards, and having nice conversations at dinner. One of our family dinners at our house started with talking about the electromagnetic catapults on the USS Ford and ending with talking about my sister’s friend’s new pants. Conversations are a great way to socialize.
During the next weeks, I encourage you to stay active, do the things you love, but keep it simple, enjoy good conversations, and keep a mental schedule for yourself.  And just maybe quarantining isn’t as bad as some say it is. God is in control of all of this and He only wants the best for us. “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love.”  –  2 Peter 1:5-7

A word of encouragement 04.11.2020

“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink: or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?  Look at the birds of the air: they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.  Are you not more valuable than they?  Can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?“ (Mathew 6:25-27 NIV).

As we welcome each day, let us acknowledge the behaviors and activities we must curtail, or at least temporarily eliminate as prudent moves that God has blessed us in grace to educate and illuminate us. Once we have done all we can do, then it is time to enjoy what we can. Currently, I am enjoying long walks, listening and seeing all the singing birds and the blooming flowers.  This reminds us of the bounty and celebration of Spring. I use part of my walk to catch up with old friends by giving them a phone call and even wave at new friends along the way.  Walking helps me eliminate the worry that all of us are carrying around in some capacity these days. I appreciate the entire “worry” section of Mathew 6: 25-33. Concern is a positive emotion that creates action and discipline, but worry can lead us into a dark tunnel of fear and despair, which is unproductive and at times destructive.

Throughout the Bible, God proclaims “Fear Not”. “Fear Not” is used over and over again with Moses, Joshua, and David. God does not say: “stand down, do nothing, and I will take care of everything.” He gives challenges to his people to go forward, knowing he is with them. Our challenge is to go forward, doing what must be done, trusting in God to be at our side no matter what happens;  to welcome concern, but not to fear or worry.

God Bless You,
Wayne Gregg

A word of encouragement from our contemporary worship team on this Good Friday.

Easter Sunday best and sweats

Hello Evergreen family,
It’s time to show up, and show out, this Easter Sunday! We might be attending Easter services from the couch this week, but that doesn’t mean we can’t look good doing it. We wanna see how you accessorize your sweats this Sunday – Pajamas and pearls? Slippers and a sports coat? Take a picture and show us your Easter outfit on Sunday with #ThriveTakeOut. There will be winners and prizes for the most creative!

A word of encouragement 04.09.2020

Hello Evergreen family.
In my last words of encouragement, I encouraged you to take refuge in our Father’s arms during this uncertain time.  Little did I know, I needed to hear that again….God was loud and clear to me when I was having one of those “terrible no good very bad days”. Have you had one of those yet?
I was plugging along, taking in the new changes and new normal to our world pretty well.  Then….it came…..that dreaded announcement that Fayette schools would be closed for the rest of the year. My heart already broke for my college senior, but now it was broken again for my high school senior. I knew I had to be strong and positive all over again, but I couldn’t. The tears just kept coming and yes, I had some ugly crying in my bedroom closet. It was terrible. It’s one thing to be sad for yourself, but my unbearable sadness was for my daughters and I couldn’t fix it. It was a horrible feeling.
So, I went on a run. During the cool down, I selected my playlist “favs”, and shuffled the order of songs. The first song that came on was from Casting Crowns “Just Be Held”.
God spoke to me loud and clear as I was listening to that song.  “Hold it all together, everybody needs you strong. But life hits you out of nowhere and barely leaves you holding on…..”  It continues with “So when you’re on your knees and answers seem so far away…..you’re not alone, stop holding on and just be held.”
His overwhelming love flooded me, with sweat and tears rolling down my face. I was loved and held.
You are loved. He wants to hold you during those low days too. We all have them. If you haven’t yet, you will.  When you need a hug from your Father, I encourage you to listen to that song or you can listen to it now, if you are having a good day.  I’ve included the youtube version of it with the lyrics below.
Stop holding on Evergreen…. and just be held.
Love you all, Jill
