“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” — James 4:8

As we enter the season of Lent, we are invited to embark on a journey of reflection, repentance, and renewal. This sacred time, traditionally lasting 40 days (excluding Sundays), mirrors the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). It provides us with an opportunity to intentionally draw closer to God through various practices that deepen our faith and strengthen our relationship with Him.

Fasting:

Fasting is a powerful way to focus our hearts and minds on God. Jesus taught about fasting in Matthew 6:16-18, reminding us that it should be an act of worship rather than a display of piety. Consider fasting from certain foods, social media, or activities that distract you from God. Use this time to pray and meditate on Scripture. For instance, when you feel hunger or the urge to check your phone, turn your thoughts to prayer, inviting God into your day-to-day life.

Prayer:

Engaging in deeper prayer is essential during Lent. Set aside specific times throughout your week to pray, both individually and corporately. The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:9-13) serves as a guiding framework. Use these moments to confess, give thanks, and intercede for others. Consider keeping a prayer journal to document your thoughts and how God responds to your prayers throughout this season.

Scripture Reading:

Committing to read Scripture daily can profoundly impact your spiritual growth. Select passages that speak to the themes of repentance and renewal. For example, read through the Psalms, allowing David’s cries for help and expressions of worship guide your own prayers. Engage with the Word through study, reflection, and memorization. As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal truths that draw you closer to God.

Acts of Service:

Serving others is an embodiment of Christ’s love. Lent is an excellent time to engage in acts of kindness and service within your community. Volunteer at a local organization, help a neighbor, or engage in church outreach programs. In Matthew 25:40, Jesus reminds us that when we serve the least among us, we serve Him. Let your acts of service be a reflection of your faith and a means to connect more deeply with God’s heart for the world.

Reflection Questions:

How can you incorporate fasting into your Lenten journey this year?

In what ways can you deepen your prayer life during this season?

What passages of Scripture do you feel led to meditate on?

What specific acts of service can you commit to during Lent?

Lent is not merely a time for giving up but a season for giving ourselves fully to God. As we practice fasting, prayer, reading Scripture, and serving others, we open ourselves to the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. Let us draw near to God, trusting His promise that He will draw near to us. May this Lenten season lead us into a deeper understanding of His love and grace, preparing our hearts for the joy of Easter.

Prayer:

Gracious Father, as we continue on this Lenten journey, help us to draw closer to You. Teach us the value of fasting, deepen our prayer life, illuminate Your Word to our hearts, and inspire us to serve others. May our practices during this season lead us to a richer experience of Your love and grace. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
