Matthew 4:18-22
“As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. ‘Come, follow me,’ Jesus said, ‘and I will send you out to fish for people.’ At once they left their nets and followed him. “Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.”
Matthew 4:18-22 (NIV)
Responding to God’s Invitation
The call to follow Jesus is not limited to the first disciples; it extends to each of us today. Lent is an opportune time to reflect on how we respond to God’s invitation in our own lives. Are we willing to leave behind the “nets” that entangle us – our preoccupations, fears, and attachments – to follow Jesus more closely? Answering God’s call requires a willingness to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown. It challenges us to trust in God’s guidance and provision, even when the path ahead is uncertain. Like the disciples, we are called to surrender our plans and ambitions, allowing God to lead us towards a greater purpose.
Living as Disciples
To live as disciples of Jesus means to embody his teachings and mission in our daily lives – rooted in Christ. It involves cultivating a deep relationship with God through prayer, scripture, and worship – growing in faith. It also calls us to serve others with compassion and love, recognizing the inherent dignity and worth of every person – branching out in love.
The journey of discipleship is not without its challenges. We may encounter moments of doubt, difficulty, and sacrifice. However, we are not alone on this journey. Jesus walks with us, empowering us with his grace and strength. He continues to call us, inviting us to grow in faith and to participate in the work of his kingdom.
